Instituto Pedro Nunes contributes to the SWIFT (Spacecraft With Inflatable Termination) project, in a consortium led by Portuguese start-up SPACEO, chosen by the European Space Agency (ESA), which aims to develop technology for collecting end-of-mission satellites and space debris.

SWIFT, with a budget of 3 million euros, plans to launch an inflatable device similar to a parachute by 2028. This device will enable the efficient de-orbiting of satellites, reducing the accumulation of space junk.

IPN contributes with its vast experience in Product Assurance, with Rui Henriques, from IPN's Quality Department, being responsible for the product assurance, ensuring that all components and systems meet the strict quality and reliability standards required by ESA.

The SWIFT project is part of ESA's ARTES (Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems) programme.

The international consortium responsible for the project includes three more entities, namely GomSpace (Luxembourg), SpaceLocker (France) and Solidflow (Netherlands).
