Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN) was present at the kick-off meeting of the European 6G-VERSUS project, a key initiative focused on carrying out large-scale trials with 6G technology in five different verticals, spread across six pilot sites, with sustainability as a cross-cutting principle.

The event was held on 21 and 22 January 2025 in Malaga, bringing together 34 partners from 10 countries, including research institutions, technology companies, SMEs and NGOs, which are part of the project consortium.

IPN was represented by Jorge Pimenta, Innovation Director, and Sérgio Figueiredo, Technical Project Manager, who actively participated in the discussions on the project's goals, timelines and strategic milestones. The meeting was also attended by Pavlos Fournogerakis, head of the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) programme, which is funding this initiative under the Horizon Europe programme.

The 6G-VERSUS aims to design and develop a 6G-enabled application framework for the triplet of vertical (V-App), AI-assisted (AI-App) and network applications (N-App). It will demonstrate and assess framework performance, sustainability impact, scalability and business models through real-life vertical use cases in six pilot clusters:
  • Bulgaria - AI-driven optimisation of distributed renewable energy
  • Greece - Collaborative robotics for search and rescue
  • Spain - Immersive telepresence actuator for field operations
  • Portugal - Sustainable and secure port infrastructures
  • France - Data-driven strategies for water and waste management in critical infrastructures.
  • Finland - Energy self-sustaining 5G base station.
IPN undertakes a key role within 6G-VERSUS, both as technical lead for the activities involving the Portuguese cluster, and task lead for Knowledge Transfer, Startup acceleration and Scaling-up activities, contributing its experience in innovation and technology transfer for accomplishing the objectives of 6G-VERSUS.

6G-VERSUS has received funding from the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) under the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 101192633.
