The Coimbra Local Health Unit (ULS) hosted the Minister for Youth and Modernisation, Margarida Balseiro Lopes, as part of the National Artificial Intelligence Agenda roadmap. During the visit, innovative projects and strategic partnerships that are transforming the health sector in Portugal were presented, highlighting the Health Technology Incubation Unit and the European TEF-Health project, both in partnership with Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN).
The Health Technology Incubation Unit, a collaboration between the University of Coimbra Hospitals and IPN, is an incubator designed to support startups in the health sector, providing a dynamic environment for the development of innovative technological solutions. Located at the University of Coimbra Hospitals, this incubator in a hospital environment provides temporary workspaces, mentoring from healthcare professionals, access to hospital infrastructure, assessment with clinical feedback, multidisciplinary collaboration and the adaptation of solutions to the real needs of hospitals and patients, promoting the creation of products and services tailored to the demands of the sector.

Another highlight of the visit was the presentation of TEF-Health (Testing and Experimentation Facility for Health AI and Robotics), a European project led in Portugal by IPN, which aims to test and implement artificial intelligence and robotics solutions applied to health. This European Commission initiative promotes the development, certification and testing of medical devices based on these technologies, helping to transform clinical care and create a more efficient and accessible healthcare system. IPN is the leader of the national consortium, which includes the Local Health Unit of Coimbra (ULS Coimbra), the Local Health Unit of São João (ULS São João), the Shared Services of the Ministry of Health, Health Cluster Portugal and EIT Health Innostars, in a collaborative network that includes nine European countries.
