Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN) was present at the European Funds Exhibition, held at Alfandega do Porto between 10 and 12 December 2024, as a benchmark example of the application of European funds in the Centre region. This event, which brought together projects that are shaping Portugal's future, also offered the opportunity to explore the support available under the Portugal 2030 programme.
Throughout the PT2020 programme, IPN has implemented more than 11.5 million euros in collaboration with dozens of national companies from traditional and emerging sectors such as Space, Moulds, Glass, Construction, Automotive, Health and Wellness, Environment, Agri-food and Education.
With a unique national and international model for transferring technology and innovation to the market, linking the scientific community and the business community, IPN, through its six Research and Technological Development (R&TD) laboratories and its business incubator, contributes to the creation of ideas, businesses and innovative solutions.
Throughout the implementation period of the PT2020 programme, IPN has contributed to technological solutions for the competitiveness of companies, applying its skills to more than 23 projects related to: Additive Manufacturing, Cutting Tools, Coatings, Thin Film Sensing, Life Cycle Analysis, Surface Engineering, Decarbonisation, Natural Language Processing, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Learning, Robotics and Automation, Connectivity & Digitisation, 3D Modelling, Networks and Communications, Technology Transfer, Entrepreneurship and Innovation.
At the 1st European Funds Exhibition, IPN presented the results of one of its projects for the space sector - SIAAC Space Solutions, co-funded by the Centro2020 programme. This project supported 12 companies from the Centre region, boosting business development in the space sector.
Through the Centro2020 programme, IPN expanded the Business Incubator, offering dedicated infrastructure for startups in the space sector, welcoming companies incubated in the ESA BIC Portugal programme.
For a decade, IPN has led the European Space Agency's (ESA) first Space Solutions Centre, which brings together the three technology programmes promoted by the agency:
- ESA Business Incubation Centre in Portugal (ESA BIC Portugal) which includes the management of funding to support the incubation of 60 startups by 2024;
- Technology Brokers Network: space-ground technology transfer;
- ESA Business Applications Ambassadors: managing funding for the application of space assets in business models on Earth.
Since its creation, the IPN incubator has supported more than 420 companies, of which more than 60 per cent are still active, and has generated more than 7,000 highly qualified jobs, returning 14 times more value to society than the public investment received.
IPN is currently working collaboratively with national companies on more than 15 R&D and Innovation projects under the P2030 programme, in emerging areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision, Cybersecurity, Augmented Reality, Sustainability or Polymers.
