Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN) and the Competence Centre for Geospatial Information signed a collaboration protocol, marking the start of a strategic partnership to foster innovation, entrepreneurship and economic and social development in the Coimbra region.
The ceremony took place at the IPN Incubator and was attended by João Gabriel Silva, President of the IPN Board, Emílio Torrão, President of the Coimbra Region Intermunicipal Community (CIM-RC), Jorge Custódio and Rui Simão, respectively Mayor and Councillor of Pampilhosa da Serra City Council, and Jorge Brito, Executive Secretary of CIM-RC.
The agreement aims to exploit the potential of geospatial data to create new business opportunities and innovative solutions, strengthening the local business fabric and promoting collaboration between the public and private sectors.
Under this agreement, the aim is to identify emerging areas of activity and promote actions to support entrepreneurship based on geographic data; attract companies to the region; collaborate on programmes to support entrepreneurship; create a support centre for companies operating in areas related to the Competence Centre; promote networking events between the public and private sectors; support the training of management teams; help launch the support centre for companies; and identify companies in the IPN ecosystem that could benefit from geospatial data.
João Gabriel Silva, President of the IPN Board, highlighted the potential of the partnership: ‘We are basically saying that there is great potential for the Geospatial Competence Centre to be interesting for economic activity.’
The Competence Centre for Geospatial Information in the Centre Region, created in 2022 with an investment of 2.2 million euros under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), is the only entity of its kind in Portugal. It acts as a support centre for the implementation of the Balcão Único do Prédio (BUPi) project, for training those involved in the Simplified Cadastral Information System and for sharing knowledge. The centre gathers and makes available geographic information from various public entities, allowing it to be processed and applied to innovative solutions.
During the meeting, the Municipality of Pampilhosa da Serra presented innovative projects such as DARK SKY, the Pampilhosa da Serra Space Observatory and the Pampilhosa Business Centre - Technology and Innovation Centre for Space and Earth. These projects demonstrate the region's commitment to technological and scientific advancement, establishing it as a strategic centre for innovation.
The Pampilhosa Business Centre, which will be inaugurated soon, will house the Competence Centre, consolidating it as an essential infrastructure for attracting startups, technology companies and scientists.
