Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN) was present at the Final Conference and transnational meeting of the Erasmus+ project ‘Digital Life Learning - DIGILIFE’ on 4 and 5 December 2024 in Rome, Italy, an initiative focused on developing the digital skills of older adults.

Entitled ‘Bridging Generations: Leveraging Intergenerational Dialogue to Promote Active Aging and Enhance Students’ Skills’, the final conference brought together experts in education, health, social innovation and stakeholders from various sectors to debate the importance of intergenerational dialogue as a tool for promoting social inclusion and active ageing.

The event featured panel discussions, video testimonies and talks by experts. Among the experts was Fatima Matias, IPN's training coordinator, who explained the training methodology developed by the institute. This model has been recognised as a replicable tool that can be adapted to other contexts, standing out for its practical focus and personalised approach.

Over the course of the project, hundreds of older adults took part in training sessions held in Portugal, Spain, Italy and Greece, with concrete results:
  • Increased digital confidence: participants reported feeling more secure when using technologies for everyday tasks such as online communications and managing finances.
  • Reduced social exclusion: the activities created intergenerational support networks, strengthening the sense of community and combating isolation.
  • Developing skills in young mentors: university students acquired teaching, empathy and leadership skills.

The project, carried out over 26 months, has left a legacy of tools, good practices and a renewed vision for digital and social inclusion. IPN, with five European partners - Cáritas Diocesana de Coimbra (Portugal), Plataforma del Voluntariado (Spain), People Behind (Greece), Università degli Studi di Roma Tor Vergata (Italy) and Fondazione garagErasmus (Italy) - trained adults over 65 in digital skills, promoting their autonomy and well-being, while providing young university students with an opportunity to actively participate as digital mentors, enriching their own educational and social experiences.

The project demonstrated how collaboration between generations can overcome digital exclusion and strengthen community ties. DIGILIFE has left a lasting impact, creating a replicable model for promoting digital and social inclusion across Europe.
