The 2024 edition of the Clinical Abdominal Ultrasound Training Course will begin in October and is the result of a joint initiative between the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (FMUC) and NOVA Medical School (NMS). This course aims to enable students to acquire or improve their technical skills in ultrasound imaging.

The course is aimed at doctors or medical students with an interest in acquiring knowledge, technical skills and experience in the use of ultrasound scanners and probes; in the identification of pathologies through ultrasound images; and in the practice of obtaining ultrasound images in the abdominal region, incorporating the knowledge acquired into clinical practice.

The training course has a total duration of 40 hours (1.5 ECTS), divided into 30 hours of asynchronous online modules and 10 hours of face-to-face practical sessions taught by specialist radiology lecturers from the partner institutions.

The training in Lisbon will take place on the following dates:
  • Online (30 hours): from 14 October to 15 November;
  • Face-to-face practical classes (10 hours): 25-26 or 27-28 November.
The training in Coimbra will take place on the following dates:
  • Online (30 hours): from14 October to 15 November;
  • Face-to-face practical classes (10 hours): 26 and 27 November;
The practical sessions include demonstrations of abdominal ultrasound using a robotic tele-echography tool and practical exercises in ultrasound image collection using a probe and an ultrasound scanner. At the end of the training course, successful students will be able to apply for a certificate issued by the University of Coimbra.

The course costs €200 for eligible participants. There are a limited number of places. The official language of the course is English.

The TrainR4U project, led by the Pedro Nunes Institute (Portugal), is made up of the University of Coimbra (Portugal), the Coimbra Hospital and University Centre, NOVA Medical School (Portugal), Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu (Spain), Fundacion Joan de Déu (Spain), Trinity College Dublin (Ireland), Medical University of Lodz (Poland), Tecnalia Research & Innovation (Spain), and Sensing Future Technologies (Portugal).
