The 9th edition of the
Coimbra Space Summer School (CSSS) took place on the premises of Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN), in Coimbra, on 6, 7 and 8 September. With around 45 registered participants, this year's summer school also welcomes 18 international students from the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in Planetary Geosciences - GeoPlaNet, promoted in partnership by the Universities of Coimbra, Nantes (France) and Gabriele d'Annunzio di Chieti/Pescara (Italy).
CSSS is a summer school aimed at higher education students, researchers, entrepreneurs and anyone over the age of 18 who is interested in exploring the space economy or who wants to develop a business idea that uses space technology for terrestrial applications. The event encourages participants to propose ideas that will improve life on Earth by creating innovative services or products that incorporate space assets.
The 2023 edition focuses on the European Space Agency's (ESA) JUICE mission and features a diverse programme that encourages knowledge sharing and contact with institutions in the space sector. For three days, participants can attend conferences and receive mentoring from experts in the field of space, innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as socialise with Portugal's space community. Among the various activities is a visit to the Geophysical and Astronomical Observatory of the University of Coimbra (OGAUC) for the Astronomy Fair and Night Observation.
The 9th edition of CSSS will feature speakers from ESA - European Space Agency, Portugal Space - Portuguese Space Agency, the Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences and IPN, among other organisations, including Natacha Callens, Administrator of the ESA Academy, Maarten Roos-Serote, planetary scientist and fiction film director at Lightcurve Films, and Carlos Romero Moreno, from ESA BIC Madrid.
The initiative is organised by IPN, which coordinates ESA Space Solutions Portugal, in partnership with OGAUC, the Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences and the GeoPlaNet Master's Degree.
