ULS Coimbra and IPN announce partnership for innovation in Digital Health and Medical Devices

As part of Coimbra Invest Summit, the Coimbra Local Health Unit (ULS) and Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN) signed a strategic partnership with the aim of promoting innovation in the health sector, on 11 October 2024. The partnership will be structured around three main areas of action, with the aim of empowering ULS of Coimbra, boosting support for startups and encouraging the validation of new technological solutions. The formalisation of this partnership took place at Coimbra Invest Summit, with the presence of the Mayor of Coimbra, José Manuel Silva, the president of the Board of Director of the ULS of Coimbra, Alexandre Lourenço, and the president of IPN’s Board, João Grabriel Silva.
The first line of the partnership involves carrying out training activities for professionals at the ULS of Coimbra, with the support of IPN and IPN’s Incubator (IPN-INC). The goal is to prepare the teams for the correct dynamisation and implementation of the incubation and technological validation initiatives envisaged in the other areas of the partnership.
The second line of action involves IPN and IPN-INC supporting the management of a physical space dedicated to dynamic incubation and located at the Hospitals of University of Coimbra. This incubation in a hospital environment is a flexible and adaptive process that offers support to startups who develop innovative products and services in the health sector. The startups can count on temporary workplaces, mentoring from health professionals, access to hospital infrastructure, evaluation with clinical feedback, multidisciplinary collaboration and adaptation of the solutions developed to the real needs of hospitals and patients.
The third line of the partnership consists of the creation of a “Test-Bed” environment, which will allow us to carry out tests and validate solutions in the areas of Digital Health and Medical Devices. These tests will be conducted in real or representative environments, addressing different levels of technological maturity. The initiative aims to accelerate the implementation of new technological solutions, ensuring that these are properly adapted to the needs of health professionals and patients.
This partnership between ULS of Coimbra and Instituto Pedro Nunes refinforces the commitment of both entities to innovation and improving healthcare provided to the population. By promoting the dynamic incubation and validation of technological solutions, the collaboration seeks to transform Coimbra into a centre of reference in Digital Health and innovation in the area of Medical Devices.
