Medication use is one of the main pillars of healthcare, with enormous potential to improve quality of life and health outcomes when appropriately prescribed and managed. However, Medication-Related Problems (MRPs) — events or circumstances that interfere, or have the potential to interfere, with desired therapeutic outcomes — remain a major global threat to patient safety, effectiveness, and healthcare sustainability.
MRPs, including prescription errors, drug interactions, inappropriate or omitted therapies, poor adherence, and adverse drug reactions, are responsible for significant increases in mortality, morbidity, and healthcare costs worldwide. This issue is especially severe among older adults living with multiple chronic conditions and polypharmacy, who often manage complex medication regimens at home.
Despite numerous initiatives to reduce medication errors across prescription, dispensing, administration, and monitoring stages, their implementation and effectiveness remain inconsistent. Fragmented digital solutions focus mainly on adherence tracking or dispensing, failing to address the full spectrum of MRPs. Furthermore, low health literacy, limited communication between care providers, and the environmental impact of medication waste exacerbate the problem.
In a world facing aging populations, rising chronic disease burden, and increasing demand for safe and sustainable healthcare, there is an urgent need for an integrated, user-friendly, and resource-efficient home medication management solution.
AllyMED offers a comprehensive solution for home medication management, focused on the real-time identification and resolution of Medication-Related Problems (MRPs). Utilizing artificial intelligence (AI), modular storage, printed sensor technology, automatic selection and dispensing, as well as clinical algorithms tailored to each MRP and eco-pharmaco-stewardship practices, our solution promotes the optimization, safety, effectiveness, and efficiency of medication use while reducing its environmental footprint.
The AllyMED project aims to develop an integrated and intelligent solution for home medication management, promoting greater safety, efficiency, and sustainability in the use of medicines.
Among the main technological advances proposed is the modular storage system with individual biocompatible compartments, which allows the adjustment of compartment size and quantity according to the user’s needs, ensuring protection against light, humidity, and temperature. In addition, the monitoring of device conditions using printed technologies will enable continuous control of temperature and humidity through printed sensors, ensuring the integrity of stored medicines. The high-precision system for the automatic selection of medicines will ensure correct dispensing regardless of the shape or size of tablets or capsules, eliminating errors and the need for manual organization.
In parallel, the project includes the development of algorithms for the identification and alert of Medication-Related Problems (MRPs), capable of analyzing clinical and usage data to detect risks and support preventive interventions in real time. These will be complemented by computer vision algorithms to identify the user and the act of medication intake, ensuring that each medicine is administered to the right person, in the correct dose and at the right time. Together, these innovations will create a technological ecosystem that optimizes medication use, improves health outcomes, and contributes to a safer, more efficient, and more sustainable home-care system.
The proposed developments aim to enhance home medication management, promoting the efficiency and safety of pharmaceutical interventions. They enable innovative solutions that help users take their medicines correctly and on time, providing essential information to identify and resolve MRPs while improving overall health outcomes.
