Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN) is supporting a group of innovative companies selected to solve critical challenges in the health sector in the Centre of Portugal, through the HealthChain project.
This project aims to develop digital solutions to improve the quality of healthcare, with the direct involvement of healthcare organisations and technology companies, with the aim of responding to real challenges in patient care and promoting innovation in the healthcare sector across Europe.
The Coimbra Local Health Unit (ULS Coimbra) identified two main challenges: the continuous care of post-operative patients and the cognitive and functional rehabilitation of the elderly. To respond to these challenges, two SMEs were selected for each challenge, with a local leader to ensure effective communication, and an interregional follower to bring new solutions and perspectives.
The first ‘RecoMed’ challenge is related to the continuous care needs of ULS Coimbra's Plastic Surgery and Burns patients, and communication failures can cause medication errors. To this end will be developed a digital solution to optimize patient medication reconciliation in the ULS Coimbra’sPlastic Surgery and Burns Department. This platform, developed by VirtualCare, with the support of Complear, aims to improve patient safety and reduce medication errors by integrating with the hospital's electronic medical records system.
At ULS Coimbra, 70% of patients are elderly, facing cognitive decline during hospitalisation, with insufficient rehabilitation approaches. This is what the second ‘Rehabilitate@mente’ challenge focuses on. To solve this challenge, the CogniViTra 2.0 platform will be developed. Neuroinova, together with Everythink, will improve the cognitive and physical rehabilitation process for elderly patients with this personalized platform that will combine cognitive and physical exercises to improve patients' recovery during and after hospitalisation.
Over the next few months, the selected companies will take part in an intensive process of co-creating and piloting their solutions with the CHUC, receiving support to validate and scale their innovations in the real context.
IPN plays a key role as Ecosystem Supporter in the project, acting as a link between ULS Coimbra and the business sector.
