Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN) was present at the X Meetup Digital Health Portugal, an event aimed at discussing innovations and promoting sustainability in the health sector, on June 28th of 2024.

João Quintas, Coordinator of R&D of IPN’s Automatics and Systems Lab (LAS), was one of the speakers on the discussion panel “Implementation of Robotics in Portuguese Health”, during which he demonstrated the institute’s competencies and experience in the field of medical robotics and the process of developing a solution for real time tele-ultrasounds.

During the interactive session “Demonstration of Robotic, AI and Telemedicine Technologies in the exhibition area”, João Quintas together with Gabriela Simões, Researcher at LAS, also introduced two systems developed by IPN, in collaboration with European and national partners, in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics.

One of the systems, focused on tele-robotics, allows the doctor to receive ultrasound images, videoconference with the patient and feel the force made during the exam, remotely and in real time through two robotised stations, one next to the patient, and another next to the doctor. This robotic system allows to decrease unnecessary travels and access to healthcare for patients in more isolated areas.

The telerehabilitation system is a solution developed for helping patients with needs of cognitive and physical stimulation, as well as specific rehabilitation procedures like the case of facial paralysis. Through the use of technology, the health professionals have access to a new tool which allows them to provide support to their patients, remotely and with exercises.

Luiza Almeida, Business Developer at LAS, had the opportunity to explore and identify possible partnerships between IPN and the organisations present at the meetup.

The meetup had the objective to gather experts in AI, Robotics and Telehealth in order to discuss the latest trends and innovations and explore opportunities and challenges for implementing technologies in the Portuguese health system.

The participation in the event was an opportunity for IPN to reinforce its contribution towards innovation and technological development in the health sector in national and international context.
