Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN) hosted, on May 30th, the consortium meeting of TEF-Health - Testing and Experimentation Facility for Health AI and Robotics, a European Commission initiative that aims to streamline the process of certification and testing of technology based on artificial intelligence and robotics in the health area. IPN, through the Laboratory for Automatics and Systems (LAS), leads the national consortium and will provide services in technology and regulation of medical devices.

TEF-Health, co-funded by the European Commission in an investment of eight million euros in Portugal and lasting five years, aims to promote personalized medicine and citizen-centered care, increasing the effectiveness, resilience and sustainability of health systems, through the application of solutions of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics.

This programme also aims to reduce inequalities in healthcare provision in Europe, without compromising compliance with legal, ethical, quality and interoperability requirements demanded in the development of innovative solutions.

In addition to IPN, this initiative counts on the participation of the University Hospital Centre of Coimbra (CHUC), the São João Hospital Centre in Porto, the Shared Services of the Ministry of Health, the Health Cluster Portugal and EIT Health Innostars.

This project will create structures called Testing and Experimental Facilities (TEF), which will create a bridge between companies and hospitals. TEF, in addition to serving as a testing and demonstration environment for solutions, will also serve for ethical and data protection reviews of the companies' projects, also contemplating activities such as incubation or market analysis.

The European project includes a consortium of 52 entities from 10 countries, led by the Charité University Hospital in Berlin (Germany).
