Although the number of digital tools aimed at the legal sector has been growing in recent years, the adoption of new technologies in this area has been rather slow, and this area of activity is heavily dependent on human resources and their ability to carry out tasks. A case that illustrates precisely this slowness is the fact that the Portuguese state has been condemned by the European Court of Human Rights in more than 75 per cent of the cases heard, the main violation being the excessive delay of Portuguese justice.
AI4JURIS proposes an innovative system that will optimise some of the most time-consuming tasks in the legal field, taking advantage of the huge amount of data currently available, to which the most advanced technological developments will be applied, in order to speed up and support human decision-making, making it faster, more efficient, safer and more reliable. This system should be able to automatically:
- Anonymise court decisions, guaranteeing the privacy of all those involved in those decisions;
- Classify legal documents, identify relevant cross-references in those documents and identify any legislative amendments/revisions;
- Annotate legislative documents based on external sources (e.g. other legislative documents, theses, videos...);
- Support legal professionals (e.g. lawyers, jurists) in their day-to-day work using an intelligent assistant.
Project expected objectives:
O1: Develop anonymisation solutions adapted to different types of legal documents in Portuguese;
O2: Automate the tasks of summarising and annotating legal documents using natural language processing techniques;
O3: Provide an intelligent assistant capable of answering questions from legal professionals with relevant and truthful information;
O4: Integrate the different functionalities developed during the project into a single system that makes them available to legal professionals in a complete solution to support their day-to-day work;
O5: Increase the productivity of legal professionals.
