IPN has decades of experience working with SMEs, industry, end-users, technological buyers and providers, public authorities building innovative and disruptive solutions to diferent sectors using it knowlegde on Big Data&AI, cibersecurity, fixed&mobile communications and software engeneering, Robotics, Eletronics, Embebed-systems, materials and fabrication processes, surface modification, energy efficiency and fabrication. IPN is also the first ESA Space Solutions Centre in Portugal congregating the 3 ESA’s innovation programs (ESA BIC Portugal; ESA BA Ambassador Platform and ESA Tech Broker).

The digitalization of the economy and society, towards a more competitive and innovative Europe is a key area for IPN. Over the last years, IPN has been implementing several national and international projects in different economic sectors, which its cornerstone relies on advanced digital technologies, namely:
- Artificial Intelligence: machine learning, natural language processing, pattern recognition, optimization, embedded AI, artificial agents, etc
- Cybersecurity: Intrusion detection, self-protection, personal data protection, etc
- IoT: sensors, platforms, data acquisition and communication, etc
- Distributed ledger technologies (Blockchain)
- Communication systems and services (5G and virtual networks, virtualization, etc)
- Robotics: tele-operation, collaborative robotics, cloud robotics, human-robot interaction, autonomous mobile robots
- Human-machine interaction: multimodal perception, human-machine interfaces

Fields of activity
IPN provides consultancy services to the industrial sector to conduct quality improvement activities, increased productive efficiency and to solve problems related to industrial materials, in close collaboration with their partners.
On the field of the surface engineering, IPN is specialised in the development, implementation, production and characterisation of thin coatings produced by cathodic sputtering for modifiying the surfaces of materials. In partnership with industry, IPN develops protective coatings and functional surfaces for areas of application in the field of engineering, in sectors such as tools and moulds, transportation, energy, decoration, medical technology, aerospace, textiles and agriculture.
IPN develops ideas and projects around additive technologies and final shape parts production technologies.For this purpose, we develop feedstocks, composites and multimaterial structures, using:
- Electro-spinning
- Rapid prototyping by machining of different materials
- Additive manufacturing
- Powder injection moulding of metallic and ceramic materials (PIM)
- Extrusion of fibres with additives

IPN coordinates ESA Space Solutions Portugal, that includes:
- ESA BIC Portugal, offering funding and technical, business support to start ups that use space technology for terrestrial applications and new space
- Ambassador Platform management to support businesses in the short-term commercialisation, and in application of space data & technology for everyday services
- Technology Broker offering a set of services to support technology transfer from space down to Earth
