Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN) is expanding its team and is looking for a
Senior R&D Engineer specialized in
Communications Systems and
Software Engineering. The ideal person should have vast academic or industrial experience and demonstrate the ability to lead initiatives, manage projects and apply modern Telecommunications technologies, as well as Artificial Intelligence (AI) based solutions to develop edge-cutting system networks.
Responsibilities:
- Design, conduct and supervise advanced research projects focused on next-generation mobile networks, edge computing architectures and intelligent network orchestration systems;
- Develop and implement innovative solutions for network function virtualisation (NFV), software-defined networking (SDN) and edge computing platforms, incorporating AI-based optimisation where beneficial;
- Design and evaluate network architectures focused on performance optimisation, scalability and reliability, using traditional and AI-based approaches;
- Publish research results in telecommunications, software engineering and applied AI journals or conferences;
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, including network engineers, software developers, AI experts, system architects and product developers, to integrate research knowledge into practical applications;
- Lead multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring delivery deadlines, adherence to budgets and achievement of project objectives;
- Staying update with the latest trends in mobile networks (5G/6G), edge computing, network orchestration and AI applications in telecommunications, in order to foster innovative approaches in research and product offerings;
- Mentoring young researchers and team members, promoting their professional growth and development.
Requirements:
- Master's degree in Telecommunication Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering or similar areas;
- Minimum of 3 years’ of academic or industrial experience, with a focus on mobile network, edge computing or similar areas;
- Proven experience in leading or contributing to national or international research activities;
- Proven experience with open-source telecommunications platforms such as OpenSourceMANO (OSM), OpenAirInterface (OAI), among others;
- Knowledge of AI/ML applications in telecommunications contexts for network optimisation or management.
Competencies:
- Proficiency in network orchestration frameworks, virtualisation technologies and programming languages such as Python and C++;
- Experience with telecoms standards and protocols;
- Knowledge of mobile network architectures NFV/SDN principles and peripheral computing paradigms;
- Knowledge of AI/ML applications in telecommunications, including their potential for network optimisation, predictive maintenance and automated management;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills for publishing research results and for presentations in English to various audiences;
- Project management skills with the ability to manage several projects simultaneously and meet deadlines;
- Strong interpersonal skills to work efficiently within a multidisciplinary work environment;
- Innovative and critical thinking skills to face technical and research challenges in modern telecommunications systems, including the integration of AI-based solutions.
