Instituto Pedro Nunes marked the 5th anniversary of ESA Space Solutions Portugal last October 3rd, by presenting its results and achievements and the new supported companies. This celebration was part of the annual meeting of the European network “ESA Business Applications and Space Solutions (ESA BASS) Fall Meeting”, which took place in Coimbra for three days.

More than 120 international players and experts from the European space sector gathered at this meeting. The main objectives were to foster partnerships and promote technology transfer with companies such as Ansell Portugal, Eletrolux, The Navigator Company, Prio Energy, Sellafiel, Sonae Inovação, Valeo and the Portuguese Centro Region Intermunicipal Community, participating in match-making session to network and foster space technology transfer opportunities.

Over the past five years, IPN has achieved a prominent position in promoting the space economy in Portugal by directly supporting entrepreneurs and startups who are doing business and creating jobs.

IPN is the first ESA Space Solutions Center, among the 20 existing centers in Europe, to aggregate the three technology transfer programs promoted by the European Space Agency (ESA): ESA's Business Incubation Center (ESA BIC Portugal), Technology Transfer Brokers and the ESA Business Applications Platform.

The excellent results achieved in each of these programs have been widely recognized by ESA as a success story to be replicated in other European countries.

In five years - duration of the first phase of the program in Portugal - ESA's Business Incubation Center (ESA BIC Portugal) has incubated 30 companies which allowed the creation of around 100 new jobs, with a total turnover of around 5 million euros and an export capacity of over 75%.

During this period, IPN also promoted the commercialization of more than 30 space technologies in non-space markets; and with the ESA Business Applications program, has directly supported 16 projects using space assets to create new products and services in terrestrial markets with an investment of 2.5 million euros.

The event “ESA BASS Fall Meeting” was organized by IPN, in partnership with the University of Coimbra (UC) and the UC Science Museum.
