In January 2019, GreenCoat project attained the midterm. After 18 months of work, first results were discussed by all the Consortium partners and some of them presented in International Conferences. Next steps of research groups were discussed during the Consortium meeting, occurred in past 23rd November, in Trondheim, Norway.


Since July 2017, the research is being developed in three main different areas: preparation of new diamond like carbon (DLC) coatings, interaction between DLC and ionic liquids, and tribocorrosion. These areas were settled in Laboratory for Wear, Testing & Materials of Instituto Pedro Nunes (LED&MAT/IPN), University of Ljubljana, Laboratory for Tribology and Interface Nanotechnology (UL-TINT) and Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), respectively.

Besides Consortium meetings, scientific and financial management was made by the partners through a good shared network and periodic teleconference meetings.

In the XI International Conference on Surfaces, Materials and Vacuum, 24th – 28th September, Playa del Carmen, Mexico, Prof. Albano Cavaleiro from LED&MAT/IPN was invited to talk about “How sputtering can be used as a nanotechnology for production nanomaterials” and to show the GreenCoat project guidelines. Muhammad Shahid Arshad from TINT made the communication “Ultra-low friction with glycerol/ionic liquid mixture on W-DLC surface under boundary lubrication conditions”, in SLOTRIB 2018 – Conference on Tribology, Lubricants and Technical Diagnostics, 20ᵗʰ November 2018, Ljubljana, Slovenia.


The GreenCoat project is about designing green DLC coatings for interact with ionic liquid to create a new harmless lubrication system. The strict legislation (UN, EU and some national) about the environment and greenhouse-gas emissions require new lubricants to be apply in machinery of many different areas like fluid-power hydraulics machinery in wind and off-shore energy, marine systems, bioenergy from forests, geothermal energy, mining, agriculture, etc. The final product should be a system easily obtained to increase operating lifetimes, promote longer maintenance intervals and generate lower energy losses, all leading to large-scale technical and economic benefits for the EU.
